Russia can’t afford to come out openly to embrace South Ossetia. Russia is facing heavy criticism over its Georgia policy and the relationship between the two countries is in the lowest ebb now.
Russia has no choice but to ’support’ the pro-independence movement in South Ossetia. It has been receiving some rough actions from Georgia as it is supporting Chechen terrorists by providing haven in the Pankisi Valley.
Though Russia has given no indication it will ever accept them, they want this ’referendum’ to go ahead. What remains to be seen is whether Georgia is going to accept this.
The situation has become extremely volatile in the region now.
